Come to this fair housing session to learn about the basics of fair housing and two very hot topics: assistance animals and housing assistance like section 8 vouchers and housing subsidies. Of reports of housing discrimination, 50% are related to disability and 2/3 of those cases are related to assistance animals.

Also, many housing providers don’t realize that discriminating against an applicant with a section 8 voucher is similar to discriminating against an applicant based on their race or religion. In this session we will discuss all of these topics and leave plenty of room for Q&A.

Shyle Ruder is the Education and Outreach Director at the Fair Housing Council of Oregon. Prior to her work at FHCO, Shyle worked in HIV/AIDS Services for 19 years with 14 of those years focused on housing services for people living with HIV/AIDS. As part of that work, she has taught about Fair Housing since 2001. Shyle served on the Renters Education Alliance Committee for seven years and helped develop the Rent Well tenant education series, an intensive 15-hour course designed to teach individuals their rights and responsibilities as renters. She holds a Master’s Degree in Postsecondary Adult Continuing Education from PSU.

All educational classes/seminars are open to members in good standing and the general public. A member in good standing may register and pay for an invited guest at the member rate for the educational class. General public must pay at the time of registration and at the non-member rate. Deadline for refund/credit or cancellation of registration is up until 48 hours prior to the date and time of the class/seminar, up until 48 hours prior you will be refunded 100% of the cost to attend. No refunds will be issued if canceled within 48 hour prior to class. If a registered guest/member does not cancel and/or does not show to the scheduled class/seminar then the registered guest/member will be required to pay the full amount of the class/seminar. All registrations are non-transferable. Currently some classes are in Zoom meeting format. RHA Oregon is not responsible for attendee’s inability to log into Zoom meeting. The Zoom invite will go out as an email to all those registered. Please check your spam folder email settings to make sure you receive the email invite.
